A Clinical and Mycological Study of Superficial Fungal Diseases

Abstract
This clinical and mycological investigation rwas made with 869 cases of superficial fungal diseases and 119 cases of Tinea versicolor among out-patients in Dermatologic Clinic of St. Mary¢¥s Hospital, Catholic Medical College, from February to October in 1973.
In the survey, chronic paronychia was included as a superficial fungal diseases, but T. versicolor was separated from this category because it could be definitely diagnosed only by means of KOH mount without culture.
Following results were obtained:
1. The incidence of superficial fungal diseases including T. versicolor was 12.3%, and T. versicolor alone was 1.5%, among total 7, 921 cases of outpatients.
2. Common fungal diseases were T. pedis (39.2%), and T. cruris (36.3%); T. cruris was predominant in man but onychomycosis in women, and T. pedis was most common in women at age of 20~29. Superficial fungal diseases showed high incidence in 20~49 age group, especially in T. pedis and T. cruris, but T. corporis and candidiasis were higher in under 10 year of age.
3. 62 cases combined fungal disaeses and it¢¥s incidence was 6.6%.
4. The prevalence of superficial fungal diseases was met a peak at August but T. versicolor was high in July, August and September and then rapidly dropped down in October.
5. Positive rate of KOH mount among 931 scrapings was 64.7%; T. cruris, 85.5% and T. corporis, 76.2%.
6, 397 strains were isolated among positive KOH scrapings. Most of pathogenic fungi were cultured from positive KOH mounts, but Candida species except Candida albicans showed no defference between positive and negative KOH mounts.
7. Fungi were cultured from 470 (50.5%) among 931 scrapings and which was consisted of 505 (54.2%) strains. The rate of fungus culture was 80. 1% in T. cruris and 73. 9% in candidiasis.
8. 35 (6.9%) mixed cultured strains were Trichophyton rubrum mixed with Candida groups other than Candida albicans. The highest mixed culture incidence was found in T. crurls.
9. Culture rate was higher :in man in general but chronic paronychia and 20~29 age group of T. pedis in women.
10. The order of incidence of fungi were as follows: Trichophyton rubrum (34.5%), Candida albicans (23.0%), Trichophyton mentagrephytes (11.3%) and Epidermophyon floccosum (2.2%).
11. T. versicolor was higher in man and the most common age group was 20~29 (48.7%).
